Exploring Encaustic

Hi All!

Today I thought I would share my continued explorations with encaustic painting. It it so addictive to watch the wax reacting, the colours melting into one another. It is definitely challenging! The medium is unpredictable and hard to control yet so much fun!

For this piece I started with a base of stamped rice paper then experimented adding layers of colour and splashes over the top. It really has a spacey feel to it like a nebula or something and I like how the rice paper still peeks through.

These two miniature pieces are an experiment in using stencils with the wax and also incorporating fabric. I love how these turned out, they are definitely my favourite so far! 

I hope you like how these turned out! I can't wait until I find the time to try some more!

Encaustic Painting

Hello all!

This year so far has been a busy one but I thought I would pause a minute to share with you some new encaustic painting I have been exploring (having been bought the kit for Christmas) Encaustic is an ancient art form dating all the way back to Egyptian art 100-300 AD The word encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos which means to burn in, and this element of heat is necessary for a painting to be called encaustic. It uses a mixture of beeswax and damar resin with different pigments mixed in. You use a hot pallet, working with melted wax and heat guns to melt and blend the different colours together.

I used wax a lot back at University to create sculptures so I feel like it is going back to an old friend and yet I have never attempted encaustic painting and working with a hot pallet holds new challenges for me. I was a little nervous to start with but I am starting to get into the flow of it now and I love it! It is quite addictive watching the wax react to the heat and pigments.

I love how you are able to carve into the wax and embed different objects and textures in it. I have also been experimenting adding ink and pastel pigment to colour the wax in between the layers. The possibilities of this medium seem endless and I am really excited to continue to explore where it will take me!

Summer Sketches

Hello All,

So the Kids have gone back to school today marking the end of another summer. It always seems to go so fast. We have had a good one, very busy as usual going here there and everywhere and shipping the kids off to various family members to cover the days we had to work. Despite this we did manage to get a long weekend away just the four of us. A few days camping near Scarborough which was lovely. You can't beat fish and chips by the sea.

Here are a few quick sketches I managed of the girls whilst they were playing on the beach.

Done in pen and watercolour I think they work really well to capture the moments perfectly. Lovely memories to treasure. 

I hope you like them too! Back to the routine of school and work now and my workshops are starting very soon so time to get organised!

Exciting News!

Hello all!

Well the last few weeks have been both frantic and exciting! Firstly I went to deliver a trial workshop to a group called StraightCurves in Chesterfield with the hope that they would hire me to start delivering some art workshops. I did a two hour introduction to art journaling and I am happy to say that they loved it! I start work there very soon!
I am really excited about this opportunity. It is lovely to see a group enjoying themselves and trying out the new ideas that I teach and I love to watch how everyone progresses over time. I feel this is a really good step for me to start seriously doing this as a career which is so exciting!

To top this off I got through to an audition for 'The Big Painting Challenge' on the BBC which takes place this Sunday. I am both giddy and terrified in equal measures. I doubt I will get on the actual programme but it is a huge compliment to get this far. If I do get through I will have the opportunity to learn so much and work with some fantastic artists which will be amazing!

All this means that I have been frantically painting and planning and journaling in preparation! here is a little of what I have been getting up to....

The above is a selection of some recent journal pages that I have been creating either as samples for the Chesterfield studio or as ideas for workshops using a variety of mediums and techniques.

These last three are experiments, practicing painting things that I normally don't paint and to a time limit. The first is a watercolour, I usually avoid buildings like the plague! The second is a selection of plants from my garden which I have attempted to do in my usual mixed media style. The third is a timed 2 hour still life challenge. These three came out well but there were several that didn't! Painting in a time limit is hard cause I don't have my usual time to stand back and reflect on it for a few days and work on it bit by bit. I have been well out of my comfort zone but its been worth doing I think.

Experiments

Hello!

Well I realise it's been a while so first let me apologise for that. It has been a busy few weeks! I have been feeling very inspired lately to experiment and play with new things and go back and try my hand again at old things that I haven't done for years!

One reason for this is that recently I applied to go on 'The Big Painting Challenge' on the TV (this is a series that has a different challenge every week and one artist gets knocked out each week) Don't get too excited, it doesn't look like I have got through but by just applying got me experimenting with different types of paintings and with different mediums that I haven't reached for in ages.

Here are a few of the experiments!

This is my cat Biscuit! This was done on watercolour paper with brushos. I use brushos all the time, love them for adding colour to my paintings and mixed media projects but I have never tried to paint an image with them alone. I was really pleased with how this came out!

This one I did in only 10 minutes and with pen and brushos again. I wanted to it to be a bit freer and more expressive. It's simple but effective I think.

This one (again on watercolour paper) is done with brushos, pen and watercolours. I love how this one came out, it is definitely my favorite of the three. I really enjoyed using watercolours, they are not usually my 'go to' paint but this has led me into a bit of a watercolour phase at the mo. I am doing loads of experiments with them. I have never been taught to use them and never had the inclination to try until now. I will keep you posted with my progress!

I have many other projects on the go at the mo, including a new mixed media canvas and an art journaling workshop that I am running this week with a new group, which fingers crossed will lead to lots of workshops in the future!

Finished painting of my daughter

Hello All!

I have been so busy and so inspired over the last few weeks. I have been finding time to do something creative most days which has been fantastic. On top of that I have been speaking to a group based in Chesterfield called Straight Curves about the possibility of running some workshops there. That is all looking really positive. I will let you know when those start to take place!

Today I thought I would share the finished painting of my daughter. In my last post I talked about starting one of her and had done an initial sketch. Well here she is:

I can't tell you how pleased I am will how she turned out! It was a challenge but I enjoyed every minute of it. It really captures her cheerful bubbly nature. I am looking to start one of my youngest daughter next and I will keep you posted!

Portrait Practice

Hello All!

Today I thought I would share some of the portraits I have been working on. I decided after watching 'the big painting challenge' on the BBC that it was about time I practiced painting 'well known' faces. I have never had a problem painting people I don't know very well, but the more I know the person the harder I find it to capture them. Family members are difficult but the hardest by far is a self portrait.

Well practice makes perfect and so practice is what I'm doing!

I started with my mum. I did a sketch of her first:

That went well and once I have done a sketch I feel more confident that I can translate it into paint.

So here she is. I am really pleased with how she turned out and it is the best painting I have ever managed of her! With this boost in confidence I tried to paint myself:

I enjoyed working in monotone for this one and it looks quite effective over the wash of colour. I look really serious but that is because I was looking in a mirror and concentrating! It didn't turn out too badly but doesn't look entirely like me. 

I am now on to the next one and I have really set myself a challenge by choosing to paint my daughter! Not only a face I know as well as my own but a child's face which in itself is difficult to do. So far I have only done my first sketch but so far so good;

Finished Painting - You are only as old as you feel.

Hello All,

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed getting by teeth stuck into a portrait these last few weeks! It has been a challenge but I have loved it and it is always exciting to see them appearing in front of you as they take shape. Here is the final piece:

I wanted to keep the background quite simple but fun. When I came across the photograph I loved how despite initial appearances she is clearly young at heart, wearing her boppers. I hope I have managed to express this. I do believe it's true what they say... that you are only as old as you feel!

Portrait Progress

Hello All,

Over the last few weeks I have been working on my new portrait and really enjoying it. It's been great getting back into painting a portrait and although its challenging I love seeing it take shape. I have taken some shots as I have been going along so you can see the progression. Here it is so far!

I am now on to the background which I am going to keep quite simple with a little texture and coloured with pigment powders. I hope you like her so far, I will post a final picture when it is finished.

You are only as old as you feel

Hello All,

It's funny how I go through different phases with my art work. I swing between abstract and portraits depending on my mood. I am not complaining, far from it. I love the way my art can be so varied and diverse, there is no rule that says I must stick to a certain medium or style. It's one of the things I love most about art, anything goes and the possibilities are endless.

I have been in an abstract mood for a while now but lately have the sudden urge to paint a portrait. I prepped a canvas and it was left sitting there for a week while I tried to decide what exactly I had in mind. I started looking at photos, books and magazines to try and get some inspiration and came across a photo of an elderly lady sitting in a crowd. In every way she is a stereotypical lady with a scarf, handbag and old brown coat but she is wearing deely boppers. She is fantastic and I love that despite appearances she is clearly young at heart. I decided I have to paint her. I started her yesterday after some initial sketches:

  I am really looking forward to seeing how she turns out. I have in my mind her sitting at the front with an abstract background perhaps containing some text but definitely with some texture. I am going to use really vivid happy colours. I want the feeling that you are only as old as you feel to come through.

Creative play

Hello All,

Today I thought I would share a process that I sometimes like to do when I am feeling uninspired. Sometimes I go through a lull and my motivation to create just isn't there. This is when I turn to what I call creative play. I delve into my art supplies and just pick some things that catch my eye..not too much or it is easy to get overwhelmed. On this last occasion I chose spray inks, modeling paste and some stencils, glass bead texture gel, iridescent medium, some ecoline watercolour inks, a few stamps and an ink pad, a few old book pages, and four tubes of craft acrylic.

I then prep some A3 plain paper with some gesso and get to work. Using only what I have picked I just let go and do whatever comes to mind. I don't think too much about it, simply just letting myself play with the colours and mediums and see what happens. Here's what came from this process at the weekend:

Sometimes I really like how they turn out and may add to them to create a finished piece. Other times I just stash them or cut them up and use them in other projects. What is important is that it gets the creative juices flowing again and straight away I feel more inspired. It is very therapeutic to just relax and play with the materials and even if I don't like the results I have spent a happy afternoon anyway.

I definitely recommend it if you have lost your motivation!

Finished Painting and Creative Play

Hello All,

I haven't had the time or inspiration to do a lot lately and I think cold evenings mean I end up curling up under a blanket rather than doing any art. Today however I am not at work, the kids are at school and it is freezing outside. The perfect day for some creative play.  So I just got a piece of A3 paper and a selection of art materials, set myself up with some music and a cuppa and just let myself play with the materials, not thinking too much about it:

So far so good and it felt good to be creating. I also wanted to share my latest painting which is now finished:

I am really pleased with this one, I love all the metallic colours combined with the subtle pinks. 

well back to another cuppa, maybe a biscuit and some more creative play before the it's time to pick up the kids.

New painting

Hi All,

I have tried to start the new year as I mean to go on with the start of a new mixed media abstract painting.

I started with the texture with modelling paste and glass bead texture gel both free hand and through various stencils. I then started adding colour to the smooth areas using pigment powders. I decided to use a box canvas and I am enjoying the texture spreading around the sides.

My aim is to ensure that I put aside time every week for painting and hopefully get some of them exhibited somewhere. fingers crossed.

Happy New Year!

Hello All,

Happy new year to you all! I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas/holiday. I have had a fantastic busy Christmas full of family and laughter. It just goes far too quickly, after so much build up it is over in a flash. Now I am back at work :( but the sun is shining and so far the new year has been a good one. I have a few resolutions this year.

1. To try and get more art/workshops done and focus on maybe getting some exhibitions.
2. Build up my you tube channel (although I hate filming myself!)
3. See more of friends and family.
4. To do the splits for the first time ever by the end of the year!

Now for a bit of art, here are few art journaling pages I managed to do over the hols:

This one is in my altered book journal. I was just playing around with texture and mark making and I restricted myself to just a few colours.

This is in my small journal. I really fancied using a collage background and used an old comic torn into pieces
. Many if the images were of ladies in the 50s looking so glamorous and feminine and it got me thinking about myself and how at times I don't feel very lady like at all! I used a copper paint to highlight certain areas.

I also managed to complete two mini mixed media paintings:

These are painted on canvass board and are only A5 size. I plan to frame them. I enjoyed painting these especially with the use of texture and pattern. I used pigment powders and iridescent medium to colour them.

Anyway lunch is over and it's back to work for me. I will be back with more hopefully very soon.

New Painting

Hello All,

Autumn is well and truly here or actually already on its way out with the first snow fall the other day. Christmas adverts are back on the telly and Christmas music in the shops. This is my absolute favorite time of year. I love the colours of autumn and the lovely bright crisp cool days (before it gets miserable cold and wet) The build up to the Christmas season is one the best bits with cosy evenings under blankets and delicious food ahead.

Inspired by the colours I got stuck into another painting:

To me it feels like autumn leaves in the rain. I like how the texture softens into a wash of colour like the colour is draining out down the canvas.

New Painting

Hello All,

After completing my last painting I was inspired so much by the combination of textures and vivid colour that I dived straight into another and have managed to get it finished relatively quickly:

This one makes me feel like I am under the sea looking up to the surface at the light and pattern of the current. It is full of different textures and shimmery bits that catch the light:

Here is a detail of that texture. I didn't paint this as a commission, just for enjoyment but luckily it has sold nearly straight away.

I am now trying to focus on arranging some workshops as I haven't been able to fit them in now for almost a year. These are definitely top priority now! I have also been hired to deliver a children's autumn themed craft party next month so I have that to organise too.

Finished Painting and spot of Bookbinding

Hello All,

Having lots of time off with my kids this summer taking them to various art workshops as well as getting crafty at home. I am feeling really inspired and full of creative beans. The sun is shining, its all family fun and frolics. I can't wait to get back to my various projects whenever I have the chance to.

I was enjoying my latest canvas so much I seemed to finish it rather quickly and so have gone straight into another. Here is the finished piece:

I adore all the yummy colour and texture in this one, particularly the blues and greens which I think I am going to use for the next one.

Apart from painting and the odd bit of art journaling I also had the urge for a spot of bookbinding and started three at once. I have managed to finish this one:

This one is made from an old cereal bar box and brown paper packaging. The cover is painted with acrylic paint and iridescent medium so it is all shimmery. The inside has decorative paper and sketch book paper pages. 

I love making journals! They take time but the end result is so satisfying, turning what is essentially rubbish into something that is both beautiful and useful.

I will get on and make the other two I started now!

The Start of A New Commision

Hello All,

I am back to canvas this week and thoroughly enjoying myself. I am feeling really inspired with this latest piece which is a commission for a friend of mine. Here it is so far:

And a few details too:

I have been working with inks, acrylic and pigment powders mainly, with some mica powder and gelatos thrown in for good measure. The texture is built up using tissue paper, modelling paste and glass bead texture gel. I am really enjoying the contrast between the texture and the smooth. I already have in mind two or three other canvases combining the two again.

I have progressed really quickly with it cause I can't leave it alone and I am nearly finished, but like a good book I will be almost sorry when I do. I may have to dive straight into another!
