Art Swap September

Hello All, 

I am sorry I have not posted for a while, we have had some building work at home and everything else kinda got pushed to one side! But i'm back and this time I wanted to share what I made for September's art swap.

We were tasked to create a complete mini journal. I was partnered with a young girl who told me she was really into anime and manga figures. With this is mind this is what I created for her:

It was a challenge to draw in the anime style but I really enjoyed having a go and I had a message from her to say she really likes it. She sent me a lovely journal full of inspirational quotes.

I have also been busy journaling and I started a new painting but more on this later!

Sorting, Tidying, Pies and Rats

Hello All,

This weekend was not a creative one! Most time was spent tidying, sorting, getting rid of rats (grim!) gardening and making pie (yum) When I got around to some art work it was mainly to tidy up the edges of my canvasses.

I did put together a parcel of ephemera as part of this months art swap, which fit in quite nicely with sorting and tidying! And I did manage to start a background for an art journal spread:

Whilst sorting I came across this journal which to be honest I had forgotten about. It is made of brown paper so it is quite different to work with and the fact that it is ring bound creates a different feel to the pages too. It feels a bit disjointed so its not my favorite to work with but I decided to not give in on it and therefore made a start on a background by adding modelling paste through a stencil and adding different stripes of colour over the top. Next I added circles and splats. It felt right to leave some of the brown showing and I have left it as it is now. Where it will take me next who knows but I quite like it so far.

I am in France next week (can't wait) and apart from drinking too much wine, and eating too much cheese I hope to take some art stuff with me and perhaps do some sketching or mini journaling or something....I'll see what I have time for.

March Art Swap

Hello All,

Apologies for not posting for a while, it has been the Easter hols and have been busy busy busy with the kids at home.

I did manage to get quite a bit of creating done over the holiday and this included the March art swap. I was partnered with the lovely Lyndsay from Truro and the challenge was to create mixed media bookmarks based on our favorite books. Here is what I made:

The first is one of my favorite quotes from Dr Seuss, the second is Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier and the third is Pride and Prejudice. It was difficult to choose my favorites as I do love books but these are ones I have read several times and always come back to when I want a nice read. Lyndsay received them the other day and was very pleased with them.

Here is what she sent me:

Lyndsay chose Pride and Prejudice as well and the other is based on fairy tales. I also got a lovely little bundle of goodies. I really love these, they are full of colour and texture and I especially like the paper beads.

The swap is always good fun, I love getting a surprise parcel each month and trying to create something special for someone else! I look forward to what this month will bring.

January Art Swap

Hello All,

Last month I took part in the art swap on Jennibelle's art community  The theme this time was to create an art journal page using a technique or medium that was new to you. I was partnered with Jackie from Denmark. I just had confirmation that she has received it so I can now show you what I sent:

I used the glass bead texture through a stencil (I only bought it in January so it is still very new to me.) then added colour over the top with inks and acrylics. Having found out Jackie loved horses I just had to add a horse and the quote seemed to represent the theme well. 

Jackie sent me:

The coloured background has been done with ecoline liquid water colours which I have been pondering about buying. Looking at this I might well do, they are lovely and vivid. The figures are done in gold leaf which I have never used myself so that might be something to look into as well! 

I have signed up for this months swap which is to make a heart from recyled or reclaimed materials.

Art Swap

Hello All,

The other day I received my art swap for this month from the lovely Tanja in the Netherlands. It was as if Christmas had come early! The theme this time was 'embellishments'. We were tasked with making (or buying) a bundle of goodies for our partners. I really really enjoyed this one, with the time of year it felt like I was sending off a treat for Christmas. Here is what I sent to Tanja:

The bundle included handmade tags, a mini journal, beads and origami butterflys plus some bought mini tags and little hessian jars.

I was truly overwhelmed with what Tanja sent to me:

Her bundle included Christmas glasses for me and my children, handmade beads, beautiful stencils and tags galore. Stickers, confetti, sequins, felt flowers and a box each for my girls with the components to make their own xmas decorations. 

The postman delivered the box of gorgeous goodies as we were decorating our tree so it really was like Christmas!

It is absolutley fab doing the art swaps each month. I love chatting to people from all over the world, finding out about them and trying to make something that I hope they'll love! Plus, lets face it, who doesn't love getting post!

September Art Swap

Hello All,

This months art swap on journalworkshops.ning.com  was to create two ATC's (artist trading cards) in an Art Deco style. I was partnered with Tora from Iceland. This was right up my street having just participated in a 1920's style dance show. I do love getting dressed up with all the costumes and make-up :) Here is what I made for Tora:

Facebook Group

Hello All,

Not got much to post up this week, I have been busy in my dance show and working on my commision which is nearly finished but I will wait till it is before posting a piccie.

I have been partnered with Tora from Iceland for this months art swap which is exciting. I have to make two art deco ATCs, I have some good ideas but haven't had time to make a start yet.

August Art Swap

Hello All!

Last months art swap was to create a shabby chic art journal page. Shabby chic is not my usual style and so this was a definitely a challenge. My partner this time was the lovely Janet from New Hampshire. I decided to start on a old page taken from an old 50's girl annual. It had an image of a woman looking out of the window that I really liked so I went with that as my theme.

I started with modelling paste and scrim tape, adding colour with lindy stamp gang sprays and pearlescent paints.

Here is the final piece I sent to Janet. I enjoyed making it but found the shabby chic hard to get right. I really hope she likes it!

In return I got a lovely parcel from Janet in a beautifully decorated envelope. The piece she made for me is beautiful and she also included some homemade beads and buttons which are gorgeous!

I wonder what this months challenge will bring!

Monthly Challenge

Hello all!

Off sick still, well I went in to work but they sent me home again. I decided to do my monthly challenge since I am stuck at home and have the time. The monthly challenge this month is 'Tonal pages'  Creating a tonal page using a colour that you wouldn't normally use and using as many mediums in that colour as possible.

I generally steer clear of monotone, I like using a lot of colour in my work, so I decided to give it a try and here is the result:

I used stencils, stickers, sprays, washi tape, collage. gesso, stamps, oil and soft pastel, wax paper and black and white pens. I am really chuffed how it came out actually! I may be using monotone again!

Birdie Bunting Video

May Art Swap

Hello All!,

I haven't posted for a while as I was away camping with my family and I was waiting until I had confirmation that my swap partner for May, Reeah from South Carolina, had received my piece.

The theme this time was banner/bunting and we had to create 5 flags of standard size, here is what I made!

The poem is by Maya Angelou and inspired the piece really. I chose some little songbirds and painted over them on mixed media backgrounds and added homemade paper flowers and some ribbon and lace.

I received your swap package you sent today and I have to tell you  . . .       I JUST LOVE IT!!!
The birds, the colors, the backgrounds, I could go on and on but suffice to say it is just beautiful Lisa!  I thank you with all my heart. I showed it to my whole family and even my 15 yr old son likes it and he's at that age where he doesn't like anything I show him, LOL!
I will post the pics I took of it tomorrow.  It's late and I'm pooped for today, ha, ha :-)
Oh!  I can't go without telling you that I was just taken back by the hand stitching you did with the ribbon!  I was just blown away with that and the lace on the bottoms!  Just gorgeous.  I already have it hanging on my lace curtain that's on my window right next to where I sit in my Art Room.  The ATC is just beautiful as well.  I love it all and I thank you very much!!!

 I have really enjoyed having Reeah as a swap partner and sending emails to one another, It is a great feeling sending my work across the sea and to have it so appreciated! I have also made a vid of me making these which I will post up in a bit!

Hello all, I decided to film my late monthly challenge page (create a mythical creature) as I wanted to try out the new camera and desk tripod. So here it is, another one already!

New Vid!

Well at last here it is! It is a lot better than the first I think but still could be better. The more I do the better I will get at it. I got a tripod for my birthday so will be trying another tonight with that. This Video shows me making two mixed media index cards, one of which I sent to Katie Reid as part of the Art Swap group as I mentioned in my last post.

Better late than never!

Hello all! So I ran out of time on April's monthly challenge but decided to go ahead and still have a go. The theme was 'create a mythical creature' so this is what I came up with.

The name Dewrder is Welsh for courage, I came up with that because he seems to be clenching his fists as if trying to pluck up the courage or in an attempt to be brave!
The new monthly challenge theme for May is 'Spring Dreams' so I will get my thinking cap on for that one!

Progress

Well I posted my art swap piece this morning to Katie in Worcester and will post a picture up in a few days once it has been received (so I am not spoiling the surprise!) I am also very close to finishing my second vid which shows a tutorial of two mixed media index cards, one of which is the art swap.

I have meant to get on and finish my monthly challenge, which was 'create a mythical character' (again cutting it fine) but having been to a spa break for my birthday (absolutely fantastic!) I am a bit behind. I still have two more days so hopefully will get it done.

In other news I have been invited to have a stall at Dovefest 2015 on 29th August where I will be selling homemade journals, and am in the process of trying to get some more art journaling sessions organised through Sheffield Independent School of Art

Upcoming things!

Well I have finally got around to ordering a camera to start really making my own videos and tutorials. Really looking forward to it arriving and getting started! Luckily I have access to some good editing software so once I have footage and have learnt how to use the software videos will start appearing!!

Also my ongoing projects this month are:

• More homemade journals of various sizes.
• My monthly challenge with Jennibellie - this month it is 'creative your own mythical creature'
• Art Swap (again with Jennibellie) this a new swap group where every month I am partnered up with someone from anywhere in the world. We create something on the months theme and post it out to our assigned partners. This month the theme is 'Positive Affirmation' and we are making 4x6 postcards.

I am really excited about the swap group. The chance to create something and send it out into the world and in return receive someone else's creation, what a fantastic opportunity!
I am also looking forward to creating my own mythical creature. When I was younger I was a big fan of Brian Froud, famous for his drawings off mythical creatures, some famously used in films like The Dark Crystal and Labrynth. I will definitley be looking at his work for inspiration!

I am also looking at arranging some more workshops, possible a full day one in the summer......watch this space!

Jennibellies Monthly Challenge

As I have mentioned before I am a member of Jennibellie's Art Community (which I highly recommend) Each month Jenni sets us a challenge, this month it was 'Branching out'. I must admit I struggled with this one, I couldn't seem to find any inspiration for it at all, but over the last few weeks I have been contemplating my career and thinking of ways to build it up and it struck me, I need to branch out! so I went with it, got stuck it and only just in time (the 31st!)

I don't think its completely finished, I think I may add some textiles/embellishments to it but overall I am very happy with it. I'm looking forward to what challenge April will bring. It's great to have the monthly challenge because although I am doing my own thing all the time, its nice to do something a bit different and if I am really busy with other things the monthly challenge makes me sit down and be creative at least once a month!

Jennibellie's Art Party

On Saturday 21st Feb I took party in an online Art Party event held on Jenniebellie's community site.
Jennibellie set up this event for her birthday and to celebrate the site being 1 year old. Check-ins were held throughout the day and different techniques etc posted. A chat room had been created to allow people to pass ideas back and forth and meet new people. The main project (the community project) was to create prayer flags. I got all my art stuff out and got the girls involved and as a family had a go. It was so much fun I can't really express how fantastic it was to be a part of it all. The community is really world wide and throughout the day I was chatting to people from New Zealand, America, Australia, India and many many other places. Everyone was very welcoming and comments, and photos were posted constantly. I loved the idea that we were all creating all together under the one sky, all over the world and so used that as the inspiration for my flag.

Jennibellie's site is really great and I recomend having a look, She is very inspiring and has loads of tutorials, workshops and groups to participate in.
